If you’re unsure if your PC has a light sensor, use these steps to find out.
An ambient light sensor is a small piece of hardware that has been around for many years and allows Windows 10 to automatically adjust your screen’s brightness according to the light around you for a more viewable experience.
While light sensors are relatively common these days, none have one. If you’re not sure if your laptop, tablet, or desktop has a light sensor, then there are ways you can check on Windows 10.
In this tutorial, you’ll learn two quick ways to see if your computer includes a light sensor using the Windows 10 Settings app and Device Manager.
How to check the light sensor using Settings
You can quickly check if your computer includes a light sensor using the Settings app:
- Open Settings.
- Click System.
- Click Display.
- Under “Brightness and color”, if you can check the option Change the brightness automatically when the light changes, then the light sensor is available on your device.
How to check the light sensor using Device Manager
Alternatively, you can use the Device Manager to see if your device includes an ambient light sensor:
- Open Start.
- Search for Device Manager and click on the top result to open the experience.
- Expand the Sensors category. If you see an item like “Light Sensor” then your device has a light sensor.
If you don’t see the Sensors category, click View and click the Show hidden devices option. If you still can’t see the list, then your computer doesn’t include such a sensor.
