Note: Do not terminate necessary Windows processes!
Make sure you are not terminating any Windows processes required for the proper functioning of Windows as doing so may cause Windows to crash or shutdown. The methods that you usually avoid having to terminate are lsass.exe and csrss.exe.
How to close a program in Windows 10 and Windows 8 using Task Manager
To terminate or close a program in Windows 10 and Windows 8, you should press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard to open the Windows security screen.
At the security screen shown above, click the Task Manager button. This will launch Windows 10/8 Task Manager, as shown below.
Now you want to click on the More Details option to display a complete list of running processes.
Select the software or program you want to terminate by left-clicking on it once so that it becomes prominent, as shown in the image above. Pressing the End Task button becomes available.
To terminate the program, click the End Task button, and the program will be terminated.
How to close a program in Windows 7 using Windows Task Manager
To close or end a program in Windows 7, you should press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard to open the Windows 7 security screen.
At the security screen shown above, click the Task Manager button. This will launch Windows 7’s Task Manager, as shown below.
Now that the “End Process” button is hidden, select the software or program you want to terminate by left-clicking on it once so that it becomes prominent, as shown in the image below.
When you select a program, the “End Process” button will appear. To terminate the program, click the End Process button, and the program will be terminated.
