Have you ever noticed that after moving your Windows 10 laptop from one point to another, the screen brightness adjusts without you doing anything? If so, don’t worry; It is not a virus that has taken up on your computer. This is just the Adaptive Brightness feature built into the operating system (Windows 10).

If you’re running a modern version of Windows 10, you’re probably “enjoying” a feature called Adaptive Brightness. This feature uses the laptop’s light sensor to adjust the screen’s brightness according to the light surrounding you. This brightness adjustment can be very frustrating since you might want the screen brightness brighter, but this feature doesn’t let you adjust it. So unless you disable Adaptive Brightness, I’m afraid you’re stuck with the current intelligence.

The good news is if you want to enable it or disable it, the steps for both are the same. You don’t have to worry about remembering two entirely different actions. The first thing you need to do is click on the Start button and in the “Power Options” search bar.

Select “Change Plan Settings” on the energy plan you are using or want to modify. You need to click “Change advanced power settings” (the words in blue).

Once you’re done, you should see the following box appear.

Slowly scroll down until you see the Show option and click the small plus sign next to it. After clicking, you will see many options appear, and among those, you will see “Enable adaptive brightness”. Make the changes you want to make and click OK so your preferences can be saved.

Adaptive brightness isn’t always a bad thing, and when you move, it can save you battery life to keep you up and run. The best thing you can do is keep it on when you are running on your laptop battery and keep it away when you plug it in and not worry about downright. I prefer to manually adjust my laptop’s screen brightness instead of having Windows 10 do it for me.

Another way you can change the screen brightness is by going to “Settings -> System -> Display” and scrolling down until you see “Adjust my screen brightness automatically”. Could you turn it on or off whatever you want?

If you don’t see this option on your laptop, your computer may lack the necessary light sensors for the feature to work. So it doesn’t show you a choice.

Changing the adaptive brightness setting is as easy as pie, and if you want to re-change it before, now you know how to do that.
