Chromebooks make great laptops for your little tech-savvy friends and friends. Other than signing in with your Google account, there is practically no configuration involved. However, it is still possible that your friend or cousin, or nephew has questions about what they see on their Chromebook. In these cases, a remote help on the desktop can go a long way.

For typical Windows, macOS, Linux, or PC, we usually recommend Windows Remote Desktop, a VNC client. But with Chromebooks, you’re limited to what you can install through the Chrome Web Store. This is the Chrome Remote Desktop app. Google develops the Chrome Remote Desktop app. It works seamlessly with your Google account to allow remote viewing and remote control of your Chromebook from any computer that can run the Chrome browser. We’ll be using a Windows 10 computer to control your Chromebook over the Internet for this guide.

Set up your Chromebook for remote help

Let’s start with the setup steps for your Chromebook. First, make sure you’re signed in to Google Chrome on your Chromebook. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Add and/or launch the Chrome Remote Desktop app from the Chrome Web Store. You can find it by searching for “Chrome Remote Desktop” or clicking the link in this step.

  2. In the Remote Help section, click Get started, then click Access.

  3. The access code will appear, and your Chromebook will begin waiting for the connection.

  4. Follow the steps to access your Chromebook from a Windows 10 computer below.
  5. When your Windows 10 computer connects, you will receive a confirmation. Confirm that this is the account you are expected to connect to and click Share.

Access your Chromebook from a Windows 10 computer

After you complete the steps or a Chromebook, do them on your Windows computer:

  1. From your Chrome browser, add and/or launch the Chrome Remote Desktop app from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. In the Remote Help section, click Get started, then click Access.

  3. Enter the access code shown on the other computer.

  4. You currently control your Chromebook. You can even access the shelf at the bottom of your Chromebook, which means you’ll be able to access the file system and add or remove apps.

  5. To end the session, click Stop in the lower right corner.

Control your Chromebook remotely from a Windows 10 computer or any computer with a Chrome browser – pretty simple. If you train them by receiving an access code, you can get it from there.

You may have noticed that you will be asked to give the app permissions when installing the Chrome Remote Desktop app for the first time.

This is normal, and there is no reason not to do this, mainly since Google develops this app. And if you deny permissions, it won’t work.
