Left Behind splits into two-time segments: The first is the first three weeks of 2033, when the original The Last of Us story begins. This section explains why Ellie became infected and had a new character, Riley Abel, Ellie’s best friend. The 2nd time segment is between chapter 3 and chapter 4 (Fall and Winter). The plot explains how Ellie survived when Joel lost consciousness and how Ellie saved Joel.

The story begins three weeks before Ellie meets Joel. It was a sad rainy afternoon, Ellie was lying in the room frustrated because her friends had left her all of a sudden when Riley Abel, Ellie’s best friend, sneaked into the room. She was surprised because Riley had left her for a while to disappear.
When she met Ellie again, Riley gave Ellie the Fireflies badge, learned her friend was a member of the organization, and somehow Ellie was annoyed, returned the badge, and did not speak. As for Riley, she told Ellie that she would give Ellie an explanation and a big surprise. Riley asked Ellie to follow her to a secret place.
The plot progresses back when Joel fights against a group of cannibals and is mortally wounded. Ellie carried Joel on a horse and arrived at the Colorado Mountain shopping center. Ellie found a relatively incognito shelter, where she looked after Joel’s wound and tried to sew it up. But the situation did not seem very satisfactory when Joel’s wound was showing signs of infection. Ellie was forced to leave Joel and look for an anti-infection medication in the mall.
However, when the pandemic arrived, all medicines and supplies were exhausted. Ellie was searching when she saw a helicopter crashed and stuck on the second floor of the mall. Hoping to find an ambulance box on it, Ellie found her way to climb the rusty pieces of falling aircraft.
Ellie’s memories once again fell on the rainy day of summer this year, when walking with Riley through a dark corridor and abandoned houses. The two eventually arrived at a ruined old shopping mall. This is what remains of the world before the pandemic took place.

As a child born in the post-apocalyptic era, Ellie was surprised by the old age’s furniture. She tried everything in the mall, both stoned to see who broke the first car glass,… The story progresses when Riley finds the central area’s electrical switch and turns on the lights to illuminate an area, and the two enter the game area.
The cruel reality has returned. Ellie needed to turn on the mall’s electric system to reach the plane crash area because some doors could only start when the electricity was on. With no other choice, Ellie was forced into the maintenance room to run the downtown generator. Of course, a dozen monsters were waiting to attack her in this maintenance area, but with great determination and perseverance, Ellie finally made a miracle and gained it. Ambulance box on the plane.
Back in the past, after having the electricity, the game area was glowing. The couple rejoiced and enjoyed all the games here, including taking selfies and uploading to Facebook (silly listening) huh). While enjoying the games, Ellie begged Riley not to join Fireflies. In the end, both of them escaped but knew how their fate was. This explains why Ellie was tormented when she mentioned Riley in the game and the guilt she felt when her best friend died.
Returning to reality, Ellie, after retrieving an ambulance box and preparing to return to the shelter when she discovered two heads attacked her, the front of the cannibals, the back is the herd of monsters aggressive. No other way, Ellie was forced to fight to find a way out. Fortunately, during the chaos, the demons had solved many problems for Ellie when she turned to attack the cannibal gang. Ellie finally returned to Joel and treated his injuries. The plot of DLC Left Behind ends here.
